Universal Standard continues to be one of my all-time favorite brands. Their commitment to maintaining sizes 00-40 in all items and their excellent quality and fit, means that they are the most frequently worn items in my closet. They are classic styles – some with a twist, but always refined – that can live in heavy rotation in your wardrobe. I love that I can recommend this brand to all of my readers, not just my plus-size ones.
This is an annual sale, where a wide range of US styles are on deep discount, with some items up to 80% off. The 2023 Universal Standard Sample Sale dates are April 23-May 2. Sizes and colors sell out quickly, so I encourage shopping early if you had your eye on something. Styles in this sale are final sale, so I suggest really researching your size and looking at product reviews if you’re not already a customer of the brand. There’s a pretty robust US fan base on Facebook, Poshmark, and other resale sites that you can tap to sell items that truly don’t work out.
About Universal Standard sizing
US has the most size-inclusive range of clothes available right now (other than custom/bespoke options). They have sizes 00-40, with incredibly detailed measurements for each item. Their S, M, L, etc labels are different than you’ll be used to, so if you’ve not shopped them before – please consult the size chart! I am 5’10 and usually wear a 28 in Lane Bryant and ELOQUII. This ribbed tank top is the perfect staple piece for warm weather. It has a nice, thicker weight to it than many less luxe tanks. The cut is bra-strap friendly, which doesn’t always happen with tanks. I especially love how the arm holes are the appropriate size and don’t sag underneath the arm or expose the side. This tank comes in multiple colors and is ideal for wearing with denim or shorts, or for layering.
Form Rib Wrap Top, 60%
This faux wrap top is the perfect example of an elevated staple with a twist that Universal Standard does so well. It’s the comfort and ease of your favorite t-shirt in a silhouette that offers more shape and visual interest. This particular color is called Aperol, which is very accurate! There are multiple colors of this top in the sample sale. The rib knit is soft and lightweight.
Clean Column Maxi Dress, 43% off
This clean column maxi dress is a total MVP and I think really underrated — I was surprised to see it in this sale because I thought stock would be gone! It’s one of those dresses that you can wear nearly anywhere. Dress it up with beautiful shoes and jewelry for a formal look, or throw on flats and go run errands. The jersey knit fabric is naturally wrinkle-resistant and the cut is so comfortable to wear. The drape with the front slit gives beautiful movement.
New Standard Wrap Dress, 43% off
Again, another absolute staple that every wardrobe needs, in my opinion! This is a true wrap dress with a below-the-knee length totally appropriate for work or a more modest occasion, but a classic cut that looks lovely on all bodies. Worried you’re going to be underdressed? Wear a wrap dress. Worried you won’t be dressed up enough? Wear a wrap dress.
